Compost’s second LP “Life is Round” was released on Columbia 1973. I really had a hard time finding some quality well written words or any words for that matter for this outting. I personally don’t think its marginal nor unworthy of some attention. There’s some really nice jazz/funk/soul cuts on this LP. Its really a great line-up: Read More »

Niagara’s 1972 “S.U.B.” release on United Artist (Germany). Man finding info on this record is pretty scant. This is definitely a hot morsel of German jazz/kraut/funk. Here’s some words from Gepre.net:

Prog, featuring Danny Fichelscher of Amon Düül II and Popol Vuh. First album is apparently all percussion.
Extremely funky Can soundalikes. This band contains some mainstays of the krautrock movement like Danny Fichelscher of Amon Düül II and Popol Vuh and Udo Lindenberg of something else which I can’t remember. Both these members play percussion on the LP. The LP is percussion heavy (4 percussionists in all) but not just percussion. There are some extremely funky tracks, with wah-wah guitar and busy bass runs. Read More »

Here we are once again! I’ve have the good fortune of coming into more Ilhan Mimaroglu via the very generous spirit “PhilT”:

For anyone not yet familiar with Ilhan Mimaroglu or the previous title in our archives here’s some quick words: (via Earlabs)

“Ilhan Mimaroglu is one of the composers who produced wonderful stuff in the golden era of electronic music, and then at a certain point got carried away by other projects. It’s a sad statement to make but nevertheless in my opinion true. Maybe that’s why his music, at least important parts of it, have gone lost. Present here are compositions that have been released through the US label Turnabout (at least that’s what I think) in the late 60’s. Turnabout has vanished and these compositions have never been rereleased.”

This is Chilliwack’s 1971 “S/T” double lp released on A&M. This record really caught me by surprise. My previous encounter with Chilliwack had been “dreams, dreams, dreams” which was horrendous imo. But while over at a friends he pulled this out and was all “dude, whadda you know about this?”, I decided to play nice but inside was grumbling “oooh no, not these fckers”. Needless to say, the Chilliwack he had in his hand and what i had previous heard was very different.

The records first 3-4 songs are about as straight forward as you’re gonna get on this release. By track 4 and the seemless segway into track 5 the conventional ties starts loosening up. From there on out folks this record has turned out to be a closet favorite. It always stays pretty close to the top of the pile. Read More »

Gylan Kain’s “The Blue Guerrilla” LP was released in 1971. This is a real dozy folks! I came upon this record via Ebay about 8 years ago. I was in a spoken word phase and recognized Gylan’s name from the Last Poets. I’ve been enjoying this LP ever since.

Here’s a great write up from The Left End of the Dail:

“This solo album by Gylan Kain, one of the original Last Poets — before the group recorded for Douglas Records — is a study in angry poetics, performance art, and killer presentation. Recorded and issued in the early ’70s, The Blue Guerrilla is a freestyle set before such a thing was even a dream. Read More »
